The Citadel Theatre’s Production of
VINYL CAFE: The Musical
Based on the Vinyl Cafe Stories by Stuart McLean

Adapted for the Stage by Georgina Escobar
Directed by Daryl Cloran
The world premiere of a holiday musical for the whole family based on Stuart McLean’s beloved Vinyl Cafe stories. The musical weaves together some of McLean’s most popular stories, such as: “Dave Cooks the Turkey” and “Rashida, Amir and the Great Gift-Giving” into a hilarious celebration of the highs and lows of the holiday season and the importance of community and family.

First preview: Saturday, November 8, 2025
Opening: Thursday, November 13, 2025
Closing: Sunday, November 30, 2025
Option to Extend: December 2 to 7, 2025
Audition Information
AUDITIONS IN EDMONTON: Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1.
Please note: Daryl Cloran (Director) and Jess Milton (Consulting Producer) will be present at the in-person auditions. Auditions will be recorded and sent to the rest of the creative team who cannot be present at the auditions, in accordance with CTA Clause 8:06U.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
- We welcome interest from Edmonton-based actors only.
- All submissions should include ONE PDF FILE with both a Headshot and a Resume.
- Email submission to auditions@citadeltheatre.com. Write “Vinyl Cafe” in the subject line and indicate the role you are interested in in the body of the email. We accept online submissions only.
- Audition materials will be made available to selected Artists.
- While we thank all those who submit, only those selected to audition will be contacted.
- THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR EDMONTON IS FEBRUARY 20.
Character Breakdown
- Actors are welcome to submit for any roles of interest. Please Note: The Citadel Theatre is committed to authentic representation and encourages actors to submit for roles that align with their personal lived experiences, including but not limited to cultural specificity, disability, LGBTQ+ identities, or religious affiliations.
- The pronouns and ages listed are those of the characters.
- The role of “Sam” will be played by a youth performer with auditions for this role taking place at a later date. The role of “Dave” has already been cast.
MORLEY – 50s. She/Her. Any ethnicity. Married to Dave, mother of Stephanie and Sam. Professional Stage Manager. Vocal Range: G3 to D5.
STEPHANIE – 19. She/Her. Any ethnicity. Dave and Morley’s daughter. Intensely organized. Overthinks everything. Vocal Range: G3 to D5.
MARY TURLINGTON – 50s. She/Her. Any ethnicity. Dave and Morley’s neighbour. She’s been the Neighbourhood Christmas Club President thirteen-years and counting. Perfectly comfortable doing things her way, because her way is, indeed, the best: she’s proven it. Vocal Range: F#3 to F#5.
BERT TURLINGTON – 50s. He/Him. Any ethnicity. Mary’s husband. Dave and Morley’s neighbour. A criminal lawyer who now finds joy with his Teacup Pomeranian, “Tissue”.
Also plays BUTCH THE TURKEY: a wild, wild turkey. Vocal Range: B2 to Bb4.
ADAM TURLINGTON – 19-21. He/Him. Any ethnicity. Gay. Mary & Bert’s son. Close friend to Stephanie. Has definitely used his Vogue Men subscription to inspire his hair and style. ** The Citadel encourages actors from the LGBTQ+ community to submit for this role.** Vocal Range: G2 to D4.
TOMMY – 19-21. He/Him. Any ethnicity. Stephanie’s boyfriend. A University student majoring in Undecided. He’s a better photographer than he is a poet, and he knows it. Vocal Range: F#3 to G4.
RASHIDA CHUDARY— 30s. She/Her. South Asian. The new neighbour. Before emigrating to Canada, she was a tenured professor at Peshawar University in Pakistan. She teaches Political Science and has a competitive streak that makes hyper-sensitive to learning all the facts on a specific subject. Vocal Range: A3 to D5.
AMIR CHUDARY – 30s. He/Him. South Asian. Rashida’s husband. An Art History Professor with a tender heart who loves to experience all types of food. Amir impatiently seeks to “fit in” in his new home. Vocal Range: A2 to G4.
GERTA LOWBEER – 60+. She/Her. Any ethnicity. A newly retired, dry-humoured, conservative cat-lover with a lot less cares to give about being polite or social; a member of the Neighbourhood Christmas Club. Also plays AUNT SUE – Tommy’s aunt who is head chef at the prestigious Royal Plaza hotel. Vocal Range: A3 to C#5.
POLLY ANDERSON – 30s. She/Her. Any ethnicity. A classy, confident and often misunderstood member of the Neighbourhood Christmas Club. Vocal Range: F#3 to D5.
