THE CITADEL THEATRE
LIVE SINCE 1965
The Citadel Theatre is an Edmonton-grown theatrical powerhouse that creates extraordinary productions, made for Edmonton but fit for any of the world’s great stages. It offers new and veteran theatregoers exceptionally polished, inventive live experiences that transport them, for a moment, to worlds beyond their imagination.
The Citadel is one of the largest not-for-profit theatres in North America, drawing patrons from a large geographic region that includes the greater Edmonton area as well as central and northern Alberta.
We believe that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community. As such, we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. These include theatre classes, training and camps for the Foote Theatre School and Citadel Young Companies, school educational programming from the Students Club and Inquiring Minds, and more.
We have approximately 7,000 regular subscribers, a total audience of 130,000 each season, and an annual operating budget of $13M.
We produce or present up to six plays in our Mainstage season, plus an annual production of A Christmas Carol, a summer musical, three plays in our Highwire Series, and an additional six productions in our multidisciplinary House Series (featuring concerts, cabarets, comedy, spoken word, dance, drag and other forms).
The five performance spaces of the Citadel Theatre complex are the Shoctor Theatre (proscenium stage); the Maclab Theatre (thrust stage); the Rice Theatre (a cabaret-style black box theatre); Zeidler Hall (auditorium/cinema), and the Tucker Amphitheatre.
More than 250,000 people come into our space each season, with thousands more following along on our social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
The Citadel Theatre is also home to an amazing resident theatre company that contributes immensely to the Edmonton arts scene and beyond. Catalyst Theatre creates bold, distinctive, and highly theatrical productions that are presented across Canada and around the world. Their creative team strives for the unexpected, seeking out innovative ways to tell powerful stories through the inventive and playful use of evocative music, haunting sound, poetic text, dynamic choreography, and stunning, surreal design. The company’s creative and administrative home is next to the Maclab Theatre on the lower level of the Citadel.
