Pre-Professional Training: Young Companies

Theatre Education > Pre-Professional Training: Young Companies

Young Companies

The Citadel Theatre Young Companies are advanced training and mentorship programs for aspiring theatre artists between the ages of 16-21. These theatre artists are dedicated to furthering their craft, and are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. Many of our alumni are now in prestigious acting and musical theatre training programs across North America.

  • Young Acting & Musical Companies
  • Young Playwriting Company
  • Young Production Company

Auditions for the 2022-2023 season have closed. Want to start getting ready for your audition next year? Check out our Audition Requirements (below) and get ahead of the game!

We look for promise and potential – not finished products. Don’t worry if you don’t have much, or any, audition experience. Our goal to make the audition as stress-free as possible.

Young Acting Company audition requirements:

  • One 2-3 minute memorized monologue from a published play.
  • A secondary 2-3 minute piece – can be a contrasting monologue, a song, a movement piece, etc. If your piece requires music, we will provide a sound system capable of .mp3 playback (off of your phone or laptop).

Young Musical Company audition requirements:

  • One 2-3 minute memorized monologue from a published play.
  • One 2-3 minute memorized song from a musical. Please bring sheet music so you can sing with our live piano accompanist. Please do not sing with a karaoke track or acapella.

Students auditioning for both companies:

  • One 2-3 minute memorized monologue from a published play.
  • One 2-3 minute memorized song from a musical. Please bring sheet music so you can sing with our live piano accompanist. Please do not sing with a karaoke track or acapella.
  • An additional contrasting piece – can be a contrasting monologue, a song, a movement piece, etc. If your piece requires music playback, we will provide a sound system capable of .mp3 playback (off of your phone or laptop).

Applications for the 2022-2023 season have closed.

Want to start thinking about your application for next year?

We ask for two samples of your creative writing, preferably from a play you’ve written. These samples will be evaluated by our panel on the basis of promise and potential.

Specialized Training

In addition to core training taught by an outstanding team of theatre professionals, members of the Young Companies have the opportunity to participate in specialized workshops with a variety of leading theatre professionals. Training culminates in workshop productions for the Acting and Musical Companies, and staged readings of the Young Playwrights’ new works. The Theatre Production Company students work on all of these events.

Tuition

In support of the development of young theatre artists and their contributions to a vibrant theatre community, the Citadel Theatre subsidizes approximately 75% of all costs associated with each of the Young Companies.

Tuition for the full-year program includes classes, workshops, rehearsals, performances, materials, and tickets to select Citadel Theatre shows. Tuition may be paid in installments. At least one-third of the tuition must be paid upon registration. At least one-third by December 1, and the balance by March 1.
