The Citadel Theatre, one of Canada’s largest and busiest professional, not-for-profit theatre companies, has openings for two Assistant Head Stage Carpenters. This is a unionized seasonal contract position with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) working 40 hours per week.
The Assistant Head Stage Carpenter assists the Head Stage Carpenter in the setup and operation of The Citadel Theatre’s productions making appropriate, effective, and safe use of our facilities and human and financial resources.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Supervise and participate in work related to the setup, running, maintenance, and strike of The Citadel Theatre’s productions, rentals, and other events within the facilities.
- Liaise closely with Stage Management, Designers, and Department Heads to ensure technical elements are executed as intended.
- Participate in scheduling, coordination, and planning activities related to technical work.
- Work as a member of running crews for productions and rentals.
- Supervise and mentor crews working on the stages of The Citadel Theatre’s venues by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, ensuring safe work practices, and maintaining a collaborative, respectful work environment.
- Support adherence to safety protocols and contribute to the continuous improvement of safe work practices
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE

5 years working in professional theatre production departments.
SKILLS
- Rigging in a theatre environment.
- Safe operation of a counterweight fly system, single and double purchase.
- Reading technical drawings.
- Assembling and maintaining theatre scenery.
5 years working in professional theatre production departments.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Post Secondary Technical Theatre Education is an asset.
- Experience working in an IATSE environment.
- Fall Protection Certification.
- First Aid Certification.
- Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP) / Arial work platform training.
- Pyrotechnician certification is an asset.
- Experience with motorized scenery systems is also an asset.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to climb ladders and comfortable working at heights.
- Available to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends.
- Able to lift 25kg (50lbs) frequently.
