The Citadel Theatre, one of Canada’s largest and busiest professional, not-for-profit theatre companies and facilities, is currently seeking a Bar Manager. Reporting to the Director of Hospitality, the Bar Manager plays a key role in overseeing the Bar Department and managing the operations of Citadel’s Bar Services, including all lobby bar services within this unique cultural facility. This role is dedicated to creating exceptional experiences for both patrons and staff by fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture where every team member is empowered to deliver outstanding service. The Bar Manager ensures customer and staff safety, meets revenue targets, upholds Citadel hospitality standards, and leads with respect, generosity, and genuine care. By balancing operational excellence with staff well-being and fostering a people-first approach, the Bar Manager enhances the overall success and culture of the organization.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Oversee all Bar Services operations for Citadel Theatre productions, events, and rental clients.
• Build and lead a passionate Bar Services team by recruiting, training, and mentoring staff to deliver exceptional hospitality.
• Manage Bar staff scheduling and payroll, ensuring accurate timekeeping, compliance with labour regulations, and efficiency in staffing levels.
• Collaborate with all departments and suppliers to exceed patron experience standards.
• Provide leadership and supervision during all events, ensuring a positive, engaging and respectful atmosphere for both patrons and staff.
• Maintain expert knowledge of all products and offerings, ensuring consistent execution and clear, engaging communication that enhances the patron & staff experience.
• Proactively manage inventory of food and beverage products, ensuring timely ordering, receiving, and maintenance of stock to meet the demands of all events.
• Act as Manager on Duty (MOD) for Citadel Theatre productions and events, serving as the primary point of escalation, ensuring smooth operations, and providing guidance to the Hospitality team (Bar, Front of House).
• Prepare and reconcile deposits and cash floats for staff, ensuring accuracy and accountability.
• Maintain all department-specific equipment and resources, including point-of-sale systems, appliances, and inventory tracking tools.
• Identify, develop and refine department-specific processes and procedures, ensuring operational excellence and a culture of continuous improvement.
• Oversee the timely and accurate receipt, storage, and deployment of product deliveries.
• Pour and mix cocktails, beer, and wine according to Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) guidelines, Citadel training standards, and established recipes.
• Use a point-of-sale system to process transactions, generate reports, and maintain inventory with a high degree of accuracy.
• Maintain a meticulously clean and organized environment of all service and storage spaces, ensuring the team upholds the same high standards.
• Adhere to, train, and enforce AGLC and associated regulations, laws, and/or policies relating, but not limited to, the service of alcohol.
• Liaise with rental clients to customize bar services that exceed expectations, ensuring flawless execution and a positive experience at all rental events.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Experience: 2+ years in a supervisory hospitality role.
• Skills:
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills.
• The ability to quickly build rapport with staff, patrons, clients and suppliers.
• The ability to coach and supervise a large, dynamic team.
• The ability to effectively execute emergency response procedures, ensuring the safety and well-being of patrons and staff.
• Competency in Microsoft 365 Suite (with a focus on Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, SharePoint and OneDrive).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with non-profit or performing arts organizations.
• Experience with Tessitura, Momentus, Clover, ADP Workforce Now.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• ProServe and First Aid Certifications required.
• 35 Hours/Week. Work hours are based on events and show schedules and will regularly include evenings and weekends, depending on programming and event needs. Flexibility for a variety of work hours is required.
• Ability to adapt and respond to evolving situations with flexibility and problem-solving, ensuring smooth operations even in fast-paced and high-pressure environments.
• Ability to work comfortably with competing priorities and deadlines.
• Must be able to stand for extended periods, climb stairs, and carry items up to 25 lbs.
